Healing after service: Mental health support for veterans and their families

Life after service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) can bring unique challenges. Whether you’re transitioning to civilian life, coping with past experiences, or navigating retirement, mental health support is essential – and available.

At Challenge Allied Health, we offer psychology and counselling services for veterans and their families across NSW. Funded through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), our services are accessible in person or via telehealth, providing a safe space to talk, heal, and grow.

Is this support right for you?

If you are a current member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), or if you’ve served at least one day of full-time service, you’re eligible for free mental health treatment through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), even if your condition isn’t related to your military service. Some reservists may also qualify.

You don’t need to lodge a compensation claim, and support is available for as long as you need it.

What kind of help can you expect?

We tailor our support to your individual needs. Services may include:

  • Psychology support – for anxiety, depression, trauma, or adjustment issues
  • Counselling sessions – for veterans, their family members or bereaved spouses
  • Behavioural support – practical strategies to improve daily life and relationships
  • Telehealth appointments – accessible care from the comfort and privacy of your own home (where appropriate).

Getting started is easy

Taking the first step is easier than you might think:

  • Speak with your GP
Share how you’re feeling. Your GP can provide a referral to one of our psychologists or counsellors. Veterans, their spouses and children may be eligible for DVA-funded support.
  • Contact Challenge Allied Health
Once you have a referral, reach out to us by calling 1800 795 441. We’ll match you with a professional who understands the unique needs of veterans and their families.
  • Book your first session
We’ll work with you to arrange an appointment time that suits you, either in person at one of our office locations or online.

Your GP referral will cover a treatment cycle of 12 fully funded sessions with one of our psychologists. If at the end of this time you would like to continue with your sessions, you can visit your GP for another referral.

ADF members and Veterans can use a DVA White Card to pay for treatment under the Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC) program. Many veterans already hold a White Card that covers mental health. To check your card’s coverage or apply for one, you can log into MyService or call DVA on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372). If you hold a DVA Gold Card, you’re already eligible for mental health treatment – no extra steps needed.

Why talking helps

Many veterans are used to pushing through tough situations. But mental health is just as important as physical health. Speaking to a professional can:

  • Ease the weight of stress, anxiety, or trauma
  • Strengthen family and personal relationships
  • Improve sleep, mood, and overall wellbeing
  • Provide coping tools that make daily life easier

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness, it’s a step toward living well.

Your service mattered then. Your wellbeing matters now.

At Challenge Allied Health, we’re committed to helping veterans and their families thrive in their communities. If you or someone you love could benefit from support, don’t wait.
