Mandatory SIL provider registration begins July 1

From 1 July 2026, all Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers and platforms will be required to be registered under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

This is an important change designed to strengthen the quality and safety of SIL supports across Australia. If you currently receive SIL, or are considering it in the future, it’s important to understand what this means for you, and what will stay the same.

What is NDIS registration?

NDIS registration means a provider has been formally approved to deliver supports under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. To become registered, providers must meet strict government quality and safeguarding standards set by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. This includes regular independent audits, clear processes for managing risk and incidents, and making sure staff are appropriately trained and qualified. Registered providers are also accountable for upholding participant rights, privacy, and safety at all times.

A positive step towards safer, higher quality supports

The move to require all SIL providers to be registered is designed to strengthen the quality and safety of services across the sector. Registration ensures providers meet strict standards around:

  • Quality of care
  • Safeguarding and risk management
  • Staff qualifications and training
  • Participant rights and wellbeing

This is a positive and necessary step forward. It creates greater consistency across providers and helps ensure every person accessing SIL can expect safe, reliable, and high-quality support.

Our commitment has always been the same

At Challenge Community Services, this change doesn’t alter how we operate.

We have been a fully registered NDIS provider since the Scheme began, consistently meeting and exceeding the standards required to deliver SIL supports. These new requirements simply formalise what we have always believed in: that people deserve safe, accountable, and high-quality care.

For you, this means continuity. The supports you receive, the people you know, and the way we work alongside you will remain the same.

Supporting you through change

While these updates are designed to improve the system, we recognise that change can still raise questions.

Our focus is, and always will be, on you — your goals, your independence, and your wellbeing. We are here to:

  • Answer your questions in clear, simple terms
  • Support you to understand how changes may affect your plan
  • Ensure your services continue without disruption
  • Advocate for your needs every step of the way

A long-standing commitment to our community

Challenge has been supporting people since 1958. Over that time, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to putting people first.

The introduction of the NDIS brought change, and this next phase will too. But our mission, our values, and our dedication to the people we support will not change.

We will continue to deliver services that are safe, person-centred, and focused on helping you live the life you choose.
