Jamie’s journey with Challenge Community Services began in 2015 through our Foster Care services, then known as Children’s Services. Once he turned 18, he transitioned to adult NDIS supports and Supported Independent Living (SIL), building an active life around his own interests and goals. Today, Jamie works four days a week, plays ten-pin bowling with the Challengers at Bateau Bay, works out at the gym, and plays Yu-Gi-Oh with his younger brothers and friends. But Jamie’s true passion is cricket.
During Jamie’s early years with Challenge Community Services, his disability support team recognised his passion for cricket. They encouraged him to explore the game, helped him access opportunities to play and provided ongoing motivation and practical support. With the help of his care team, Jamie’s confidence and independence grew while pursuing a goal that mattered to him.
Cricket community support
Jamie has become a valued member of the Central Coast cricket community, playing for the Northern Power Cricket Club on Saturdays and Last Man Stands (LMS) with CC Pinch Hitters on Sundays, competing in winter and summer competitions. Captain Graham Moulds and his teammates have provided friendship, encouragement and opportunities to keep developing his skills. Since beginning his LMS career in 2018, Jamie has played over 170 matches!
Earlier this year, Jamie participated in Sports Inclusion Australia (SIA) NSW cricket selection training and trials. He trained alongside other players, tested his skills and received encouraging feedback from coaches about his progress. His determination, enthusiasm and willingness to learn deserve recognition. Although he was not selected for the final NSW team, taking part was an important personal achievement.
A strong support network
While the team at Challenge Community Services have provided consistent support, Jamie’s achievements are his own, made possible through his own hard work and determination. We are proud to have supported Jamie’s journey from childhood services to an increasingly independent adult life, and our focus has always been on helping Jamie make his own choices and build his confidence to work towards goals that matter to him.
Looking ahead
Not making the final NSW team does not take away from what Jamie accomplished by participating in the trials. His commitment to cricket, employment and community activities reflects a decade of growth. Congratulations, Jamie, on giving the trials your best effort and continuing to pursue the sport you love.
