Purpose-Built Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is Changing Lives

A woman and a aman stand outside newly built SDA homes. The homes are grey and there are brightly coloured red autumn trees in the background behind them.

As someone living with a disability, it can be difficult to find a home that can facilitate your required supports, especially outside of metropolitan areas. Our focus at Challenge Community Services is finding ways to bring you the supports you need in the areas where you live, so you can remain close to your loved ones and live the life you choose. Working with an organisation like ADAPT Housing means we can deliver a new standard of quality and comfort to regional areas through purpose-built properties like these soon-to-be completed villas in Armidale.

On-track to be tenanted in early June, the villas offer a new standard for SDA homes in the region. When our team visited the site last Tuesday, they were blown away by the quality, features and progress made since our first visit back in February. These homes are thoughtfully designed to prioritise comfort, safety, and accessibility. From extra accommodations for mobility equipment to the integration of innovative assistive technologies, every aspect is crafted with the aim of empowering you to lead a fulfilling life with increased independence. What’s even more impressive (and important) is how all these things are achieved whilst still providing all the luxuries and softness of a modern home.

Whilst the progress we witnessed at the building site was exciting, what we are most looking forward to is playing our role in turning these beautifully crafted properties into homes. For people who require mobility aids or additional physical supports, it often means living in a world that is inhibitive and doesn’t quite fit your needs. Purpose-built disability housing plays a vital role in enhancing quality of life by providing tailored accommodations and support. The thoughtful design and technology integration allow you to live your daily lives more independently, requiring less support from others.

As an SDA resident, what could this look like for you?

  • Being able to make your own cup of tea for the first time, because your powered wheelchair fits under the raiseable benchtop.
  • Cooking your own dinner, because the oven door opens from the side, and you don’t need to reach around it awkwardly.
  • Checking your own mail because instead of steps, narrow doorways, and grass there’s a nice smooth, widened concrete path giving you the freedom to collect those online shopping purchases you’ve been excitedly waiting for.
  • Power points and light switches that are raised or lowered for easier reaching means you can set the mood however you please.
  • Touch screen climate control systems to control your own comfort level.
  • Private, fully accessible ensuite bathroom so you don’t have to worry about sharing a bathroom space with anyone.
  • Fully accessible outdoor spaces to enjoy.
  • Never bumping into another too-small doorway again!

In addition to these new homes in Armidale, we are also working on expanding our SDA services across other areas of regional New South Wales, bringing high quality comfort and care to people with disabilities in areas that need it most.
