Getting the right support can make a big difference. Here’s how we can help.
At Challenge Community Services, we believe every person deserves the right support to live a more independent, confident, and connected life. If you’re an NDIS participant, you may have access to therapeutic supports through your Capacity Building funding. This type of support is designed to help you build the skills you need to reach your goals. That may mean improving your mental health, managing daily tasks more easily, or feeling more in control of your choices.
We’re here to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about therapeutic supports, and how our Allied Health team can help you get the most from your NDIS plan.
What are therapeutic supports?
Therapeutic supports help you with things like:
- understanding your emotions and mental health
- learning ways to manage behaviour or build positive routines
- gaining new life skills to be more independent
Our allied health team includes psychologists, behaviour support practitioners, and social workers who take the time to get to know you, so that your supports can be tailored to your own needs.
Which NDIS therapeutic supports do we offer?
Here are some of the ways we work with NDIS participants:
- Psychology – talking through challenges related to your disability and learning strategies to help you feel more in control
- Behaviour support – creating positive routines and reducing behaviours that may cause distress and discomfort and working with your support network to make sure they understand your needs.
- Assessments – helping with diagnosing conditions, functional capacity reports or other NDIS paperwork that assists you to access the supports you need
- Psychosocial recovery coaching – supporting you to stay connected, set goals and take steps forward
Whether you want to work on your mental health, daily routines, improve your relationships, or just feel more confident, we’re here to support you.
What NDIS funding do I need for therapeutic supports?
Most therapeutic supports are funded under the Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living budget in your NDIS plan.
This covers services like:
- Psychology and counselling sessions
- Behaviour support
- Assessments
- Therapy to build daily living skills
If you’re unsure about which funding you have, we can help you take a look at your plan and explain what it covers. If you don’t have the right funding yet, we can provide information and reports to support a plan review. Or, if you have a Support Coordinator or Plan Manager, we can work with them to see what options are available.
How will therapeutic supports help me?
Therapeutic supports are designed to help you work on the things that matter most in your everyday life. Depending on your goals, they can support you to:
- Learn about your diagnoses and how to manage symptoms
- feel more confident in social situations
- understand and manage your emotions
- develop positive routines and reduce behaviours of concern
- improve your communication and relationships
- build skills to live more independently
- manage changes or challenges in life
- feel more connected to your community
At Challenge Community Services, our Allied Health team will take the time to get to know you, your goals, strengths and challenges, so your support is tailored to make the biggest difference in your life. We call this individualised support.
Do I need a referral?
Not at all!
You can contact us directly. If you’re self-managed or plan-managed, we can usually get started right away.
If you’re not sure what is included in your plan, we can help you understand your options.
Can I choose my therapist?
Yes. You have the right to choose who you work with. We’ll try to match you with someone who suits your needs and understands what matters to you.
We offer both in-person sessions (in some areas) and online support, so you can feel comfortable and supported wherever you live.
If at any time you would like to try talking to someone new, we will work to match you with a new clinician. Our goal is always for you to feel comfortable, supported, and in control of your support.

What if I’m not sure what I need?
That’s completely okay. Many people feel unsure at first. Our team is happy to talk with you, listen to what’s going on, and guide you through your next steps.
If you have a Support Coordinator, family, or others who help you make decisions about your care and supports, we’re happy to work with your support team to help you get the best support for your needs.
Where do you offer therapeutic supports?
You can get support from our Allied Health team in different locations across New South Wales and Queensland. We have offices located in:
- Tamworth
- Armidale
- Narrabri
- Maitland
- Tuggerah
- Camden
- Ballina
- Brisbane
- Ipswich
Our team also visits other areas, like the Hunter Valley, New England and North West NSW, and some parts of Western NSW.
If you don’t live near an office, that’s okay. We also offer telehealth appointments. This means you can talk to your therapist directly from your own home either via phone or video. It’s a great option if you live far away, can’t travel easily, or just feel more comfortable at home.
We’ll help you find the best way to get support that works for you.
