Moving into a new home is a big step, and for Mark, it has meant greater independence, stronger community connections, and a place that truly feels like his own. We’re grateful he’s chosen to share a little of his story so others can see what life in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) with Challenge Community Services can look like.
How did you first hear about Challenge?
“I first heard about Challenge many years ago. I went to school near the Challenge Day Programs in Quirindi.”
Are you a Quirindi local? What do you enjoy about living here?
“I have family and friends that live in Quirindi, and I like the town because I know a lot of the locals, and they know me.”
How are you finding your new home and neighbours?
“I love living here. It feels like home. I like living with my housemate; she is nice. I get along with the neighbours, and I like to go and say hello to them when they are outside. I have great support workers who care for me and ensure I am safe. I love that I can watch the trains go past from the backyard of my new home.”
Has your new home helped in your day-to-day life? Have the accessibility features made a difference?
“I like being able to have my own space to do what I want. I have my own ensuite, lounge room, and kitchen. This gives me more independence. I like that now I can access the community easier due to being in a different location. It gives me the freedom to do more, such as being able to get picked up by the bus.”
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
“I like building with my Lego, doing puzzles, reading magazines and newspapers. I love train spotting and sitting out the back of my new home watching trains go by. I like to mow lawns and weed the gardens.”
What does a typical day look like for you?
“I’m an early starter. I like to be up early and ensure I am ready for the day. Each day is different. I may wait at the front to do the school bus run with Howard’s and spend time with them in the shed before coming back from Murrurundi. Some days I attend Day Programs at Challenge in Quirindi. I sometimes go help some mates out with their trucks. I might wash the trucks, or I might go over to my mum’s house to help her do things.”
Mark’s story is a wonderful example of what the right home, the right supports, and the right community can make possible. We’re proud to walk alongside him as he continues building a life filled with independence, routine, connection, and the things he enjoys most.
