Challenge Community Services has had a footprint in the Illawarra for over two and a half years. Starting with a single client in one home, Challenge has grown to support 15 participants through their Supported Independent Living services.
“We provide tailored support in spacious modern homes for people with psychosocial disability. We support our clients to have a stable home, develop positive relationships, and work towards their goals and aspirations. We receive referrals from a number of sources, including families, hospitals, and other allied health services,” Challenge Regional Manager John Wood said.
Challenge supports their clients to achieve the skills and independence they need to live the life they choose, whilst playing an active role in their local community.
“Our Supported Independent Living services provide an avenue for our clients to participate in recreational and community activities whether it’s shopping, playing sport, craft activities, or just enjoying being out and about in the community.”
Challenge is a regionally based and focused organisation. “From our roots in Tamworth as a group of concerned parents in 1958, we’re proud to have grown to provide services to many more regional and metropolitan communities across New South Wales and Queensland.”
“Our expansion to the Illawarra was very exciting, and we have been fortunate enough to develop many positive relationships with local organisations, allied health professionals, and community groups in the area. We align ourselves with others who have a key focus and objective to empower those in our community who are disadvantaged.”
“We have recently opened a new hub at 104 Central Road, Unanderra, which provides us with a central point for staff training, client meetings, and great exposure for Challenge in the community.”
Challenge is expanding its service offering and has multiple opportunities available for people to join their team.
“We are hoping to hear from people who are passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of people with disability. This includes; promoting social inclusiveness in the community and providing access to activities and opportunities that increase independence.”
