Our Maitland Foster Care team recently hosted a cultural event to celebrate National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, bringing together our young people in care for an afternoon filled with connection and cultural enrichment. The event was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together, learn, and celebrate the rich heritage and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Foster Care Regional Manager, Evan, described the event as a heartwarming experience. “It felt really welcoming sitting around the makeshift fire, and I enjoyed seeing everyone engaging with one another. I think it’s an understatement to say the damper was a hit…certainly with the kids who were giving it roaring reviews!” The event not only provided a sense of community but also reinforced the importance of cultural awareness in the lives of our young people.
Providing opportunities for cultural enrichment is a key part of the work our Foster Care teams do to support young people in care. Ensuring that children maintain a strong connection to their culture is vital in helping them grow into confident, resilient individuals. You can learn more about the work our teams do here.
What is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day?
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, celebrated every year on 4 August since 1988, is a national day dedicated to celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. It gives all Australians the chance to show their support and learn about the importance of culture, family, and community in the lives of these children.
This year’s theme, Strong in Culture, Stronger Together, highlights the strength that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children gain from their connection to their culture and community. This theme aligns perfectly with the intention of Children’s Day, focusing on the resilience and empowerment that come from these vital connections.
Children’s Day is an initiative of SNAICC – National Voice for our Children. Each year, SNAICC organizes a national launch event at a different location and provides resources to help communities across Australia celebrate the day.
Our Maitland event was just one of the many celebrations that took place across Australia, each one adding to the tapestry of stories and experiences that make National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day such a special occasion.
