5 key benefits of Supported Independent Living

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to allow more choice and control in the lives of people living with a permanent and significant disability. If one of your NDIS goals is to be able to live more independently, Challenge Supported Independent Living (SIL) could be the right choice to help you reach this goal.

Challenge provides modern shared homes in sought-after areas with Support Workers on hand 24/7 for NDIS participants with Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding.

Keep reading below to learn about five key benefits of SIL:

1. Becoming independent

Moving into a space of your own allows you to make more of your own decisions and live the life you choose. But what if you need support in order to live independently?
Challenge provide experienced and trained staff who are able to support you with:

  • Personal care, including showering and dressing
  • Daily life skills such as cooking, cleaning, gardening and doing laundry
  • Support in budgeting and household management
  • Development of social and communication skills
  • Overnight support (sleep over or active overnight)

When you live in SIL, you can have autonomy when you want it and someone will be available for when you need support. And, of course, your family and friends can visit you at any time!

2. Making new friends

One of the joys of moving is the opportunity to expand your social circle. Challenge understands that living with other people is a great way to make new friends, therefore we strive to match you to other house members who are a similar age and have shared interests.

Challenge shared homes often contain communal facilities like the kitchen, living room, laundry and outdoor entertaining area. Sharing communal areas with other house members means that you will have lots of opportunities to be social in your everyday life.

3. More opportunities

A move of home means choice and new opportunities. Maybe you wish to move closer to where you work, where you attend day programs, or where you participate in entertainment or recreational activities?

This is a moment for you to reflect on what is important to you and consider which options might make your life easier or more rewarding.

4. Freedom and safety

Balancing freedom and safety is important to everyone. While you will share the communal areas with the other house members, your new bedroom is your own space. You will have the freedom to arrange and decorate it in a way that you like.

At least one support worker is on-site 24 hours a day to provide support for the house members. Challenge staff are highly trained in responding to emergencies and ensuring the safety of the house members, so you can enjoy your freedom knowing that assistance is close to hand.

5. Support is there when you need it

While you may be really looking forward to your new home and independence, you could also be feeling a little nervous about being without your family or carer.

Everyone who moves out of home needs time to develop their life skills and confidence. Challenge staff are there not only to help you with practical tasks but also to listen to you, understand what is important to you and help you achieve your life goals.

“My home with Challenge is safe, it is secure, but we still have the freedom to come and go as we please. If something does happen, we have the safety of knowing someone is always here, should we need the help.”
