If you’ve been exploring assessments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), you may have come across something called the ADOS-2: the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition. It’s one of the most widely used and trusted tools for assessing autism across different age groups and developmental stages.
But what exactly does it involve, and why is it so important?
The ADOS-2 is designed to provide a structured, consistent way for trained clinicians to observe and evaluate behaviours that are often associated with autism. It focuses on how a person communicates, interacts socially, and engages with the world around them. Unlike questionnaires or checklists, the ADOS-2 involves direct observation, and social interactions through play, including verbal and non-verbal communication activities.
Understanding autism and how it uniquely presents in each individual is key to ensuring the right supports are in place that enable them to thrive. That’s where assessments like the ADOS-2 can make a meaningful difference.
What is an ADOS -2 assessment?
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is a standardised assessment used by clinicians to help diagnose autism spectrum disorder. It’s considered a very reliable autism assessment tool and is used worldwide.
An ADOS-2 assessment involves a series of structured and semi-structured tasks designed to observe things like social interaction, communication, play, and imaginative use of materials. The tasks and questions involved are tailored to suit the individual’s age, language level, and developmental stage.
For example:
- A young child who is not yet speaking might be assessed using a play-based module. This involves activities like pretend play, turn-taking games, and responding to their name, allowing the clinician to observe social behaviours without relying solely on verbal communication.
- In contrast, an older child or an adult with fluent speech capabilities would complete a module that includes structured conversations, storytelling, and questions about emotions, relationships, and everyday social situations.
This tailored approach helps ensure that each person is assessed in a way that is both appropriate and meaningful for their stage of development.
Why are ADOS-2 assessments done?
Diagnosing autism can be complex, and there’s no single test that can confirm or rule it out. The ADOS provides clinicians with valuable, structured observations to support a comprehensive diagnostic process.
It’s often used alongside other tools such as developmental history interviews, questionnaires, and cognitive assessments. Together, these elements build a detailed picture of the person’s strengths and challenges, which helps in making an accurate diagnosis and informing next steps.
Importantly, receiving a diagnosis can open the door to more tailored, person-centred supports. For many individuals and families, a diagnosis brings greater understanding, access to services, and support strategies that enhance quality of life. It helps ensure that the supports in place are relevant, respectful, and aligned with the unique needs, preferences, and goals of the autistic person.
An ADOS-2 assessment may be recommended if:
- A parent, teacher, or GP has raised concerns about a child’s social communication or behaviour.
- A young person or adult is seeking a formal diagnosis.
- Additional information is needed as part of a broader autism diagnostic process.
